Spanish airline Vueling is taking its first steps to accept cryptocurrency as a means of payment for its services. In order to do this, the low-cost airline has enlisted the help of Criptan, a registered Spanish cryptocurrency exchange, to process and complete customers‘ orders using crypto. Vueling is exploring the use of blockchain and NFT (non-fungible token) technology to make this payment option available for users.

The introduction of cryptocurrency payments could improve user experience by showing customers the potential there is behind the implementation of such solutions. Jesus Monzo, Vueling’s alliances and distribution manager, said “This agreement places us at the forefront of new technologies and innovation, further reinforcing our commitment to our customers and offering the best and most advanced tools and solutions on our website.”

Criptan’s CEO, Jorge Soriano, is confident that the payment option will be available on the website of the airline by Q3 2023. The functionality will be using UATP tech, the global payments network for airlines, although further details have yet to be revealed.

The integration of cryptocurrency payments is seen as a step forward in the development of the airline industry, and will potentially make it easier for customers to book flights with the airline. Vueling will be the first low-cost airline to offer this service in Europe.
